Get deduction details from the IRS
In Publication 535 Business Expenses, the IRS does a thorough job of describing specifically how they define each business deduction. They include many examples which help clarify the concepts even more. The only problem is that Publication 535 is not one of the more friendly IRS publications. In the 58-page printed/pdf version the type is so tiny it makes the information seem far more intimidating than it actually is.

If this sounds too scary, instead take a look at the html version of Publication 535 online. Although the html version contains a number of web pages to link to, the information isn’t so crammed, so it’s much easier on the eyes (and the mind). You can find it on the IRS site by selecting the search within “IRS site” option instead of within the “Forms & Publications” dropdown (which will pull up up the pdf version).
Or, here’s the link to the html version of Pub 535. You land on the Table of Contents, which gives you a good outline of what’s on subsequent pages. But if you want the fully detailed picture, scroll down to the bottom of the Contents page and click to the Index. This lists every subtopic the publication discusses; from there you can click directly to each specific type of deduction you want to learn more about.
