Yoga @ Your Desk:
Yoga Position #26: The Arnold Schwarzeneger Pose
by Chuck Flaherty, CPA
In classical mythology, Atlas was the buff dude who carried the world on his shoulders. Now, thanks to modern science and better labor unions, we've got gravity to take care of that job, and weight lifters can pursue careers in Hollywood.
But lots of biz people still feel sometimes they're shouldering the weight of the world. So take a break from your cosmic duties. Rest your back and shoulders with this week's Yoga@Your Desk exercise.
Objective: To take the weight of the world off your shoulders by releasing upper body tension. According to the ancient Qi Gong masters, this exercise also stimulates the thymus gland and overall immune system.
1. Find your desk chair and sit down. (You can find your desk, can't you?!)
2. Place the back of your hands into your armpits, with your wrists bent. (Yes, you will look like a chicken.)
3. Gently start bending forward at the waist.
4. As you bend, simultaneously bring your elbows together and your head towards your chest.
5. Hold the stretch for 15-20 seconds. This is my favorite part, great relief for those tight muscles between your shoulder blades.
6. Reverse this by sitting back, bringing your elbows back while moving your head and chin up.
7. Hold for 15-20 seconds, and then release.
8. Repeat as necessary until you're ready to face the world again.
