"Homemade Soaps, Lotions and Candles"
Posted by Richard A Hilderbrand on 19:00:07 3/01/2004
I am thinking of opening a small manufacturing co and making old style homemade soaps, designer candles, lotions, bath oils and the like. Does anyone think this would work, and if so any marketing ideas that would help my products reach the public?

Thanks,
Richard

My sister does this in the summer and in her spare time. She also makes soy candles. Also is now getting into making jewelry. She does a farely descent job a sales. She basically does just the craft shows. Her husband is retired due to his eyes and she now only works 4 hours a day. She doesn't work summers or when there is no school. And she is doing enough business that they live comfortable.

Best of Luck

Posted by Karen on 19:07:27 4/15/2006
Anne,
My product is made from fresh goat's milk soap and natural oils. The lard that I use in it has no ADHD or other synthetic things in it. (I get the fat from my brother-in-law when he slaughters hogs and render it myself). I use all natural vegetable oils and butters (my base consist of olive oil, cocoa butter, avocado butter, sunflower oil, and coconut oil as well as essential oils on the scented varieties.) This soap not only suds up really well, it also last a long time. My husband and I use a 5.00 bar for a whole month. I have branched out and do some scents--lavendar, tea tree, lemon grass as well as honey, honey oatmeal, oatmeal, and plain. I sell at the Ardmore flea market in TN and also do mail order. If you would like to order some send me a message, you pay for the price of soap, handling, and a small shipping fee. If it is for a store I offer a discount.

Posted by Anne Billings on 23:57:03 4/14/2006
Tonya,

I have a line of "stained glass" candles that I paint that go really nicely with gift baskets, I supply one lady in my area with all the candles she puts in her gift baskets. If you are doing a bath or kitchen basket and you want a candle to match the towels, all you have to do is send me a picture and I can paint it on the side of a candle. After I paint the candle you can get any scent you would like, I have over 100 fragrance oils in stock. If you are doing a coffee basket I can do a hot butter cappachino, or morning brew candle in a china teacup, or matching coffee mug to match your basket. They are great fun!

Anne

Hello Friends,
I have been experimenting with shea butter this last weekend, and it was a huge disaster. I melted the shea butter than I added some fragrant oil, and poured the shea butter into separate containers. When I woke up this morning they were not hardened and on top of that it looked like the shea butter was beginning to crystalize. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Helpful advice?
Thanks,

6. "lotions and soaps"
Posted by kelli on 11:46:10 3/04/2004
I think everyone likes hand crafted soaps, lotions, salts, candles, etc. We like them in beautiful packaging but we don't want to spend a fortune. Depending on where you live - the type of community:

If you live in or around a tourist market/lake community: you could get your product into resorts, spas, clubs, bread & breakfast/inns, etc. They seem to like the handcrafted feel and look. You could also print personalized labels for them, which they'd like.

If you live in or around a big city: check with local shop owners (gift shops, individual owned salons, etc.) and see if you can put your items in on consignment. This is always nice as they do all the selling, you just keep providing quality merchandise.

Small towns: check out all local and surrounding county festivals. Lots of fun. Small town festivals are usuallyl cheap (less than $50) to get into. Large festivals can cost upwards of $250-$1000 for a weekend and don't typically pay off as well.

If you want to open your own store but don't want to commit to purchasing an entire store worth of merchandise - then place ads for local artisans and you offer consignment to others - you could have an entire gift store of your own with other peoples products/goods.

If you are willing to fill orders for sellers and create multiple company packing slips you may want to consider becoming a dropshipper. You will be able to list yourself on "dropship directories" there are people looking for new products every day where they don't have to invest in inventory. Put together some good pictures that people can post on their internet sites. Maybe even develop some gift baskets. I would be interested in seeing your products for my site. I currently use Springdale Dropship for some gift baskets of this type.

I do better at a hands on class where I can feel and touch and smell the different ingredisents. Thanks I live in NJ by the way. Mindy

Hi Richard,
I have been in the aroma business for 8 years now. I've owned a shop and carts in malls. I've done flea markets, craft shows, women's shows. Just about everything. It is a good business. This is all I do. I'm not sure what part of the country you are in but in the South we LOVE candles and smell goods. My concept is custom scented products. I sell perfume oils and custom scent lotions, bath salts, gels, massage oils, etc.
I say go for it. Read all you can about soapmaking and candle making. Do a search for forums on the subject.
I have a manual that I wrote with my sources if you want to go the custom blending route. Otherwise, search online and read lots of books. You'll be inspired...good luck.

Daphne,
Good to see your post and to know that you also cater to the individual desires of your clients. The candles that I make are poured to order. I have approximately 180 fragrances available and my customers may choose any color for their candle regardless of the fragrance. Because I hand pour when I get the order, I can do this for them.
I'm not a website genious but have a functional site. Please take a look at www.thecandlecupboard.net. I am currently working with a wholeseller to offer some nice candle lanterns and other candle related products so will be revamping the site soon. Also, I am going to incorporate quantity discounts, etc. It is so nice to network with other distributors.
Take care and good luck to you.

Richard,
I started an online candle business last year. I truly enjoy making candles and am very serious about making this my full time income source. The main thing to remember is marketing. You can have a fantastic, dynamic website but if no one knows it's there, you will not get any business.
I leave business cards that have my website address on them everywhere I go. I make my own business cards so this type of advertising is very inexpensive.
It can be frustrating at times because there are ALOT of people out there doing the same thing. The advantage that I have is that I have THE BEST scented candles that I have ever come across.
Good luck in all of your endeavors.

Posted by Jason on 17:56:03 11/04/2004
I visited your site and I think it would sell more if it was designed a little bit differently. The key is simplicity and elegance. I recently designed a site for a homemade soap and candle company, www.blissfulmomentssoap.com and it has a lot of good features. One is the colors are easy on the eyes. Your site has a background image that is a bit distracting (although pretty!). Also, the only method of purchase is paypal and your site takes you to the paypal site. I've done some research and many customers don't really like that method, they would prefer to stay on your site and buy something.
Anyways, let me know if you have any questions, I might be able to have some more pointers for you.
Jason

102. "Candles on line...."
Posted by Anne Billings on 00:19:41 4/15/2006
I have found that if I can get my candles under someone's nose, I have a sale. I haven't had too much success selling online, although my celebrity caricature jars sell well on ebay.....

101. "Seasonal items"
Posted by Anne Billings on 00:17:54 4/15/2006
Just a tip on pouring seasonal items. In my four years of business I have discovered that seasonal candles that sell best are the holidays that people decorate for. Easter doesn't sell for me, or Halloween for that matter. Christmas is good if you pour early enough, I start putting them out Mid-October and they are done selling by the end of November, because then people are concentrating on gifts, not decorations. Mother's Day sells well, a little Vaentines, but don't over do it, you can always pour more if you run out, if you have them left over you are faced with storing them for the next year.

And the more variety you have, the more you sell. I have a double booth at the fleamarket where I am based at the moment, and sell about $300 to $400 a weekend in a slow market, but I have about 40 or 50 different varieties of candles, and many are one of a kind.....you learn as you go. Just be frugal when pouring for the holidays. You can always pour more, as I say, but if you have to store them that is a pain, and you have used wax,gel or soap materials that could have been used in other saleable items.

Aren't I the bossy one today? LOL Good Luck!

I checked out your site and you have some very different scents at very good prices. My question is, do you know if your fragrance oils are gel safe? It doesn't really say........

Yes. Almost all of our fragrances are gel safe. If you ever place an order, put a note about gel safe usage in the comments section and we will make not to ship any that might not be.

94. "re: Samples is best marketing tool"
Posted by Daphne on 20:39:12 10/23/2005
I posted to this question last year. Its good to see it still active!! Seems like many of us are interested in the fragrance and bath and body business.

One good marketing tip I learned being in this business is "samples are king." Hand out samples wherever you go. Have one attached to your business card. Your sample of your product is just as much a statement about your business, as your business card is. So if you sell candles, my idea would be to make up those little tea lites in your top selling scents and give those tea lites out with your business cards...like if you're in the check out counter at the grocery or in line at the bank. If your product is truly wonderful, you can't beat the impact of giving out samples.

97. "Designer candles"
Posted by Anne Billings on 23:51:26 4/14/2006
Hi,

I have had a candle business at a local fleamarket for the past four years and am about to open my own store in the next month. I can tell you that candles, especially designer gel candles and all natural soy candles sell BIG. The best advise I can give you is to do research online and do lots of experimentation before you put your product out with the public. Candles can be dangerous if you dont' know what you are doing because the fragrance that you put in them is pure oil, overscent and you can cause a fire. But it is all a matter of learning the proper way to do things. There are all sorts of sites online where you can research your craft and learn to do things the right way. I can point you in the right direction to some of these sites if you would like.

Good outlets to begin selling your products are local fleamarkets, if you have one in your area, or do small local festivals to introduce yourself to the community you will be selling in. Get your name out there by marching in local parades, most dont charge a fee. I pour tealights and hand them out in a small craft baggie with my business card and some candy for the kids. Everybody likes free stuff, and women LOVE candles! You could even get small tart molds (very inexpensive at local craft stores) and make small sample soaps to hand out. Samples are inexpensive and a good way to get your name out there. I carry samples in my purse ALL the time. If I go thru a fast food place I give the server a sample with my card. If I go to a restaurant I leave a sample with my tip. Sometimes I will write 10% off on your first purchase on the back of my business card.

Too much information? LOL I do get wordy, but I LOVE what I do, it is like playing every day I go to work. If you would like more help or information, please feel free to email me at CandlesbyAnne@aol.com. I would be glad to help you out in any way I can!

Anne

Go to Yahoo site builder. It takes you through, step by step. I did mine all by myself. It is very time consuming, but fun. Go to regular Yahoo and ten more Yahoo, you should find the site builder. You will have get a webhosting account and domain name from Yahoo. Very easy to do. This is the cheapest, yet most effecient way to go. Hope this helps.
