Can any other owner of a sole prorietorship that deals with graphic design help. I have started my company but I do not know where or if I need a tax number, who I contact from the state and local governments. Basically, anything that you went through that could make it easier for a fellow freelancer. I have asked many people but they all tell me a different thing. Is getting the paperwork for starting a small business really that difficult? There must be an easier way to deal with this problem of starting up. I thought the hard part would be finding customers!

What I decided to do was to get a business license as a "DBA" or doing business as...You get a tax Id number and a stamped legal document validating your company as a legal business entity. The DBA is great..I can do business legally but dont have the strict rules to follow if I had incorporated. I live and work in New York City so all I had to do was go down to an attorney who for a fee of about 250.00 organized the paperwork and did the faxing. She then directed me to which government agency I had to go to and I there paid about 100.00 for the business license and that was it...technically a person can eliminate using an attorney and obtain the forms himself and fill them out and so forth but I wanted to make sure I did it correctly....Its a tax write off anyway...So go get 'em! and much success to you..maybe Ill see your work someday... By the way..if you really want to grow financially-take my advice and write a business plan for yourself to follow..write it as if you were going to show it to someone who would invest in your company! Our business is design..but we also have to prove that we are successful business people and that in itself will influence clients to want our services!.. Jeff Atwood Atwood Communications.

I gotta agree with Jeff here, do it right outta the gate, it makes things much easier down the line and seems to reassure clients that you are serious about your vocation. As an additional caveat to Jeffs' statements, I would advise getting the advice of a reputable cpa in advance. For example, my CPA told me of some small business tax breaks that add up to over $28000/yr in write-offs that I never would have known about.Good luck on your endevours.
