Answer from our Guest Expert Kent Capener of Capener Consulting PAGE 4 Anyway, I think I've made my point. The useful items stay visible and help make buying decisions (not to mention tell the world that my desk is a mess!). You ask what people want. My thought is that more than anything people want a place to go when they need help. Yep, it's that simple. When they're confronted with a dilemma or problem that they can't solve themselves, the most important thing is ---- TO GET HELP! And you're in the "help" business! Give people a place to go! Use a letter opener [cost $.05] with your phone number on it, and they will come! It'll take some creativity on your part to determine where your potential customers congregate or what parameters to use in determining how to target them. With persistence, you'll be able to build upon those hundreds of customers regularly. Building a referral base is like starting a long-term diet. The first step is crash weight loss, then slowing down to a regular loss over time until you reach the desired goal. Since you haven't used any of the methods recommended, you can catch up with past customers, if that's appropriate to your situation. Equally important is to start anew with the very next customer and to develop the community-based larger referral base. Hope this helps. Kent Capener of Capener Consulting
