SEE Consultants

Name: David Hunter

Location: Poland, OH

Type of Business:
Safety, Environmental, and Educational Consulting

What does your business do?
SEE Consultants offers full service Environmental, Health, and Safety consulting services to small and medium sized construction companies that do not have the resources to employ a full time EH&S manager. Through the utilization of our network of contract Safety and Health Professionals Nationwide, we can provide customized and scalable safety and health solutions anywhere in the continental United States. We have helped such companies as small residential roofing companies to institutional, commercial, and manufacturing site developers.

When and why did you start the biz?
SEE Consultants was established in January, 2001. As a former OSHA Compliance Officer, I saw first hand how much help small and medium sized construction companies needed to protect their employees, be in compliance with OSHA Standards, and work to eliminate employee injuries. Since they do not have the resources for a full time Safety Manager, they leave employee safety to luck. Sometimes they were lucky but most of the time they were not. The majority of these companies would be forced to go out of business if they experienced a single serious injury or an OSHA isnspection. I designed SEE Consultants to help these companies by providing scaleable programs that they can afford.

How Many People are in your Company?
I am the only full time employee and we have a network of contract Safety Professionals throughout the United States.

Where's your office?
My office is in a stand alone section of my home with really bad wallpaper.

What's the toughest part of running your biz?
In these down turn times in construction, contractors have to price their work with lower than ever before margins. Adding safety costs to their prices may be the tipping point to their being awarded the contractor not. However these same contractors would be in real financial trouble if there were a serious employee injury. Their Workers' Comp premiums will rise and there may be other costs to defend a negligence action whether true or false. Convincing contractors to begin establishing a health and safety program will be less costly than leaving safety to blind luck.

What's the most fun part?
I enjoy interacting with our client's construction workers. Some are real characters.

Anything you would have done differently?
At time I think I should have stayed in that cushie federal job where there is INCOME instead of IF-COME.

What's next on the horizon for your biz?
I plan on starting a national "blitz" of advertising online, in trade magazines, and through trade organizations.

What advice do you have for others?
Don't ever forget that you started the business to fill a need for your clients, not your needs.

How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
We want Idea Cafe to be the beginning of our nationwide blitz. Through Idea Cafe we can provide some safety ideas at no charge to fellow "Cafe-ers" to help them start their journey through the safey maze.

School (where, still in school, degree)?
I'm a Youngstown State University, Yougstown, Ohio proud drop out.

Prior jobs or business?
I had another successful environmental and safety consulting that was taken over by a hostile partner in 1989.

Favorite Food?
Hot Dogs

What are your pets' names?
No pets

Do any of these pets help with your biz?
N/A

Is there any one person or event in your life that led you to go into business for yourself?
Having to take precious funds from small construction companies to pay OSHA penalties to the federal government- money that could have been better utilized to improve their company's safety, not the federal bank account.

Anyone you publicly want to thank?
No
