What does your business do?
Whyte-Hall Communications specialises in providing comprehensive
publicity planning, copywriting for news releases and newsletters, and
corporate photography to help small to growing businesses,
entrepreneurs, and professionals attract clients and customers, boost
sales, create public awareness, and build credibility.
When and why did you start the biz?
I started my own business in 2000, and ran it part-time while holding a
full-time job in public relations. However, when I got redundant in
January 2009, I went full-time running my own copywriting, publicity,
and corporate photography business.
How Many People are in your Company?
One, but I utilize a bank of resource persons subject to the needs of my clients.
Where's your office?
I have a virtual office.
What's the toughest part of running your biz?
Right now, the toughest part of running my company is not having enough
support to free me up to do more strategic planning and more product
development.
What's the most fun part?
The part that I consider the most fun is being in the office in my bed
clothes. I cook my own meals, catch up on my reading and social
networking, watch the news, and work my butts off - while having a
great time doing it. No corporate job ever gave me that feeling. Most
client contacts are done virtually online (social networking sites,
eMail) or via my trusty Blackberry Storm and Skype. However, when
face-to-face meetings become absolutely necessary, client meetings
take place at one of my external offices – the Hilton Kingston or the
Pegasus Hotel.
Anything you would have done differently?
Absolutely! I would have had the forethought and wisdom to get a
business coach early on to help me steer my boat. Having a coach would
have helped me stay true to what was wildly important to me and saved me
a huge learning curve (mentally and financially).
What's next on the horizon for your biz?
I am working on setting up my website, and at the same time trying to
move forward in this sluggish economy.
What advice do you have for others?
Be sure you have a SOLID foundation before you start building. It is
very hard to keep ahead of creditors and keep a clear head when you
don't have enough money.
How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
To make new contacts, networking, marketing, publicity, and find ideas
to help me get ahead of this dog-eat-dog life.
School (where, still in school, degree)?
Journalism graduate, Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica.
Prior jobs or business?
Jamaica Defence Force (Non-Commissioned Officer); The Gleaner Company
Limited (Journalist); The Jamaica Observer Limited (Journalist); The
Turks & Caicos News (Assistant Editor); The Sunday Herald Newspaper
(Features Editor); Sandals Resorts International (Media Relations,
Group Staff Writer); The Businessuite Magazine (Editor-in-Chief); and
Food for the Poor, Jamaica (Public Relations Manager).
Favorite Food?
Curried goat (mutton) with roti.
What are your pets' names?
Don't have a pet.
Anyone you publicly want to thank?
It would have to be President Obama. He has shown that it doesn't matter
where you start in life, you have the power to chart your own destiny in
life.
